MISSION: IGNITE Powered by Computers For Children, Inc. (M:I) was established in 1997. M:I is the first nonprofit agency in New York State, and the second in the nation to have a core mission specifically to address the digital and technology divide in schools, providing upgraded computers and training.
Our programs and leadership have received national recognition for our work in bringing technology to underserved communities and technology to the classroom. M:I's innovative approach to product development and building partnerships resulted in M:I being invited to serve as an advisor on education and technology to the United States Congress NY State Broadband Task Force.
Today, Computers For Children is serving on the Governor's Broadband Access & Adoption Task Force for New York State to help address the technology access gaps and digital literacy programs
Computers For Children of AMERICA started in 2001 as a way to bring like minded organizations together to address digital access and literacy and to share best practices. In 2003, M:I's KidCo Program (now Rebuild IT) was launched in five cities throughout NY State and is still in use today.
M:I programs have touched the lives of nearly 100,000 at-risk school-age kids.
More than 30,000 computers have been installed in area schools and the community that have limited resources and access to technology, and that also have student populations that are primarily made up of low-income populations.
The M:I's KidCo program provides hands-on technology training was created in 2000 that gives high school age students the opportunity to acquire a "real" skill in the technology industry. KidCo students learn to repair, refurbish, and rebuild computers. They also learn Microsoft Office Suite that includes: Word, Excel and Power Point, as well as creative digital critical for today's workforce and to be successful in college. |
